Mission Statement

 

The SFU Economics Student Society is dedicated to enhancing the academic journey and overall student experience within the economics department. Through a range of programs, initiatives, and community-building activities, we strive to foster a sense of belonging, promote engagement, and facilitate meaningful connections among economics students at Simon Fraser University.

 

Vision Statement

 

The SFU Economics Student Society (ESS) envisions a dynamic and inclusive community within the economics department at Simon Fraser University. As the heart of undergraduate economics student life, the ESS provides a platform for relaxation, social interaction, intellectual exchange, and personal development. Our programs and activities complement the academic curriculum, enriching students' educational experiences through social, cultural, professional, and recreational opportunities. ESS serves as a bridge between students, faculty, alumni, and the broader SFU community, creating a vibrant and supportive environment for growth, exploration, and success.

1. Enhance Student Engagement & Interaction

Establish an online platform or forum where economics students can connect, share ideas, and engage in discussions

Create department-specific social media accounts to promote events, share relevant information, and encourage interaction among students

 Organise regular meetups, coffee hours, or study groups for students to interact and build relationships

Collaborate with student clubs and organisations to host interdisciplinary events and foster cross-departmental connections

2. Expand Workshops & Events

Conduct surveys and gather feedback from economics students to identify their interests and preferences regarding workshops and events

Recruit knowledgeable and engaging guest speakers from academia, industry, and alumni networks to host workshops and seminars

Form partnerships with local businesses, organisations, and industry professionals to provide students with real-world perspectives and practical insights

Advertise workshops and events through various channels, including email newsletters, departmental websites, social media platforms, and physical posters

3. Increase Transparency and Communication

Establish a dedicated section on the student union's website for sharing updates, announcements, and important information relevant to economics students

Implement regular newsletters or email bulletins to keep students informed about departmental news, opportunities, and upcoming events

Organise town hall meetings or open forums where students can directly interact with faculty members, voice their concerns, and provide suggestions

Utilise online collaboration tools and platforms to facilitate communication and project management between student union members, faculty, and students

4. Cultivate an overall more enjoyable student experience

Plan and organise social events such as departmental mixers, game nights, or outings to local attractions

Establish mentorship programs pairing upper-year students with incoming or younger students to foster a sense of belonging and guidance

Create a platform for students to showcase their talents and interests through talent shows, art exhibitions, or student-led initiatives

Collaborate with other student unions and organisations to co-host large-scale events, such as academic conferences or career fairs, promoting interdisciplinary networking opportunities
